Imperial Notions

"This lesson is about Indian colonial history under Portuguese control and the effect it has had on culture today. Students are given the definition of colonialism and imperialism, and are asked to find examples of countries that have experienced either/both of these. Then students read an article about Goa, a state in India, in which people want to use "heritage tourism" to attract visitors. Students are then divided into groups to research countries/regions that have been affected by colonialism and imperialism. Students divide up research and write a position paper on whether these things were good or not for the assigned area. This lesson pulls students away from the historical aspect of this indicator, but could be used as an assessment when we are talking about long-term affects of colonialism and imperialism."
